Chandigarh District Cricket Team Selection

Chandigarh: The trials for the Chandigarh District Cricket Team Selection will be held tommorow i.e- july 4, 2008 at Government Senior Secondary School - Sector 19, Chandigarh. The players born on or after 1.9.1986 , are eligible. The participants must come in proper playing kit, white shoes along with the original certificate of date of birth.

The first match will be held on july 10 at Panchkula.

Sharma guides Lions to win in second practice match

Chandigarh: An inspired spell of bowling by Rajesh Sharma who picked up three wickets giving away 33 runs in three overs guided Chandigarh Rockets to register a 42-run win over Ahmedabad Rockets in the second practice match held at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Sector-3, Panchkula on Wednesday. Earlier, Chandigarh Lions won the toss and elected to bat first.

Batting on a batsmen friendly pitch, Chandigarh Lions posted a total of 132 runs for the loss of six wickets in the allotted 20 overs. Andrew Hall was the top scorer for Chandigarh Lions playing a knock of 26 runs while Chetan Sharma contributed 22 runs. Earlier, Chandigarh Lions lost their opener Mathew Elliot who made 11 runs while Dinesh Mongia departed without troubling the scorers. Gaurav Gupta too departed after playing a knock of six runs. Harpreet Singh and Chetan Sharma then began the rescue act before Harpreet departed after playing a knock of 17 runs. Chetan Sharma and Sarabjeet Singh then steadied the innings for Chandigarh Lions. Chetan Sharma then departed after making 22 while Sarabjeet Singh made 17. Andrew Hall and Karanveer Singh then took the total to 132 for 6 at the end of the allotted 20 overs. In reply, Ahmedabad Rockets was bundled out for 90 in 17 overs. Opener Sachin Dholpure was the top scorer for Ahmedabad Rockets laying a knock of 19 runs while Bhima Rao contributed 15 runs. Opener Pervez Aziz departed early after making 1 while Rakesh Patel contributed 10. Skipper Damien Martyn too departed after making 10 runs before the middle order fell apart. All-rounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi also fell early after making nine runs before the last three wickets fell. For Chandigarh Lions, Rajesh Sharma picked up three wickets.

Taekwondo kid goes international

Chandigarh: Getting inspiration from the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), the young taekwondo player Dhanraj Gautam is keen to follow the footsteps of international wrestlers.

Six-year-old player, who had won a number of gold medals is now all prepared to participate in the upcoming martial arts championship to be held in April in Russia.

Having a craze for the game of wrestling, Dhanraj started playing taekwondo but gradually got adapted to the pace and is now keen to make his country proud.

“The reason I took to taekwondo was to be better than the others in fighting, but now I find the game interesting, and decide to pursue it.”

Though, Dhanraj has won a number of championships, but it is the age that matters the most, and it did for Dhanraj too, who could not stop his tears whiling sharing his experience of winning the first gold medal at the age of five.

Presentations held at PU students’ research meet

Chandigarh: Poster and podium presentations in three broad areas of basic sciences and engineering, health sciences and social sciences and humanities was held on the second day of the Student Research Convention, currently being held at Panjab University.

In social sciences, eight presentations were made on themes ranging from educating less privileged sections to female empowerment by self-help groups, and popularity of South Korean films in Northeast India, stock markets etc.

In the basic sciences category, mitigation of selenium toxicity, sediment prediction model for the management of land degradation, DNA bar coding of fruit flies, generating electricity from photosynthesis, ecological characterisation of the Harike Wetland and alternative cancer therapy was discussed.

In the health sciences, targeting of serotonin receptors for migraine treatment, use of natural antioxidants for management of osteoporosis, the efficacy of yoga and Tai Chi in the treatment of diabetes and incidence of anaemia among college girls was discussed.

Meanwhile,in order to encourage all participants, a parallel session to the convention will be held for entries that had not made it to the Zonals. Nearly 30 students presented papers on subjects ranging from e-business, e-governance, women’s perception of TV advertisements, the failure of the mid-day meal programme in slums and a portrayal analysis of disability in Indian cinema.

DAV School win Advisor’s Cup

Chandigarh: DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8 ‘A’ team won the Adviser’s Cup by defeating Sanjay Public School, Sector-44 by seven wickets in the final of Inter-School Under-19 Limited Overs Cricket Tournament organised by Chandigarh Administration at the Sector-16 Cricket Stadium here today.

SPS won the toss and elected to bat first. Anil Sihag played an unbeaten knock of 103 runs which consisted of eight fours and lasted for 114 minutes. Sanjay Public School posted a respectable total of 234 runs. Chasing a victory target of 235, DAV ‘A’ team achieved the target in 38 overs and in the process lost just three wickets.

Vibhuti takes away under -12 singles crown

Chandigarh: Local girl Vibhuti Khullar grabbed the girls’under-12 singles beating Simran Wadhwa of Delhi in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 in the AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament at the CLTA Stadium in Sector 10, here, today.

Manish Kumar of Delhi won double title. Second seed Manish Kumar of Delhi emerged winner in the boys under-14, the Delhi lad upset Rishab Deb of Punjab whom he beat in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.Manish later combined with Nischay Rawat of Chandigarh to claim the boys doubles title beating Punjab duo of Rishab Dev and Amit Bzad 6-3, 7-6 (5).

Amit Bzad, a trainee of Harvest Tennis Academy of Jasowal (Ludhiana) completed a double by winning the boys under-12 singles final. Second seeded Amit toppled top seed Jatinder Singh of Chandigarh in three sets 6-2, 1-6, 7-5. Rajbir Singh also recorded a double delight by winning the girls under-14 as well as girls under-14 doubles titles. In the singles final, Rajbir defeated Riya Bhatia of Delhi 6-0, 6-1.

Eventually, Rajbir and Hasan Abdal Dhanoa (Pb) got the better of Haryana pair of Deepti Rana (Har) and Shweta Sangwan (Har) 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 in the girls under-14 doubles final.

India has good chance in SAF and Asian Football Championships, says Bhutia

Chandigarh, February 14 Sounding hopeful of India’s preparation for the upcoming SAF and Asian Football Championships, Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia said on Friday that India had a good chance in the upcoming championships and need to focus on training well for the tournaments.

“Indian players need more international exposure especially after the Nehru Cup win in 2007. The team needs to play more at the international level, which they are lacking at this time,” Bhutia said on Friday in Mohali, where the Mohan Bagan captain along with his teammates had a brief visit on their way to Ludhiana as the team visited one of the injured players Sanjeev Maria at his residence. The entire team later proceeded to Ludhiana where they will be playing in the ONGC League on Saturday.

The 31-year-old player, however sounded happy when asked about the way the Indian team was shaping up. “The Indian team has jelled well over the past few months and players like N Pradeep, Sunil Chetri, Stephen Dias and Subroto Paul are quite talented. It is a sine blend of youth along with experience and I am quite sure that the team will show a fine performance in the upcoming SAF and Asian Football Championships. We won the SAF Federation Cup in 2005 and this time I am hopeful of repeating that performance,” said Bhutia who has scored 20 goals for India in 51 matches at the International level.

Rishab sets up title clash with Manish

Chandigarh: Local lad Nischay Rawal lost to Punjab’s Rishab Dev 6(2)-7, 3-6 in the boys’ under-14 singles semifinals of the AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament being held at Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association, Sector-10, here today.

Now, Rishab will face Manish Kumar of Delhi in finals. Manish thrashed the Punjab player Jasbir Singh 6-0, 6-0.

In boys’ U-12 singles, Jatinder Singh of Chandigarh and Amit Bzad of Punjab set title clash. Jitender got the better of another local lad in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 whereas Amit beat Tejas Kapoor from Delhi 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in well-contested match.

GNPS register exhilarating win

Chandigarh: Opener Jaskaranvir played an breezy knock of unbeaten 81 runs to enable Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36 snatch an exciting four-wicket victory with one ball to spare against DAV Senior Secondary School C, Sector 8, team in the Under-19 Inter-School Cricket Tournament for Adviser’s Cup held at St John’s School in Sector 26, here, today.

Batting first DAV ‘C’ scored a total of 146 for 3 in allotted 25 overs. Openers Harpreet (17) and Maninder (20) scored put up a 33-run stand for the first wicket. An undefeated knock of 70 runs by Robin Singh and his 51-run association with Vaibhav Garg (10) were best feature of the DAV innings. Robin and Satsurmukh (18) were involved in unbroken 43-run association for the fourth wicket as DAV ‘C’ made 146 for 3.

In reply, GNPS-36 made 147 for 6 in 24.5 overs. Opener Jaskaranvir who remained not out on 81-ball 81 contributed to the victory. Jaskaranvir played the sheet anchor’s role and also kept the scoreboard moving. He hit nine boundaries. Only aganvir (18) and Nikhil (12) were the other main scorers.

PEC grabs badminton title

Chandigarh: The Panjab Engineering College (PEC), Chandigarh drubbed Thapar University, Patiala, 2-1 in the girls’ category while 3-1 in the boys’ category to clinch the Inter-Engineering Deemed University Badminton championship held at PEC, here, today.

In the singles’ encounter, Samridhi (PEC) got the better off Kana Bhardwaj (Thapar University (21-10, 21-14) while Neha (PEC) outclassed Sneha (21-8, 22-20).

NIT Kurukshetra and NIT Jalandhar secured third positions respectively in the tournament.
