Chandigarh government school toppers get laptops..

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

In a one-of-its-kind morale booster for government school students, Chandigarh’s education department has awarded laptops to two Class 12 toppers - one a student in a city government school and the other a rural school student.

Laptops have been awarded to Pankaj Kumar and Lakshay Manchanda, toppers in the government school category in village and city, respectively.

Lakshay was a student of Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS) in Sector-16 and scored 94.6 percent in the commerce stream in Class 12 and Pankaj Kumar, a student of Government Senior Secondary School, Mani Majra town, scored 88 percent in the vocational stream in Class 12.

“It came as a surprise to me when I came to know that the administration is awarding a laptop to me. I knew that I will secure good marks but I had never thought of topping in the entire city,” said a jubilant Manchanda.

“I have taken admission in B.Com honours at Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) in New Delhi. Then, I will do an MBA from some top college of the country after gaining one-year work experience following graduation from the college,” he said.

Kumar said: “It is just like a dream come true for me as I was badly in need of a computer but was not buying it because of its hefty price. Now I am determined to do more hard work and bring more laurels to the city. I owe my success to my parents and teachers.”

There are over 100 government schools in Chandigarh which are sought after among students from Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. The overall pass percentage of government schools here was 85.09 percent for Class 12 while the pass percentage of model schools for Class 10 was 88.95 percent in 2007-08.

“To my knowledge, it is for the first time that any government of this country has awarded the toppers of public schools with such a valuable prize as a laptop. Such a gesture of our education department will certainly encourage students to work harder,” R.K. Sharma, principal of GMSSS-16, told IANS.apple-macbook-air-case

Government-Run Chandigarh Schools To Get Individual Computers & Internet Connections

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010
Chandigarh government is planning to provide the students of government schools with individual computers and internet connections. These projects are being planned under the Vision-2010′.
Chandigarh’s new Director-Public Instruction (DPI-schools) Sunil Bhatia said Monday that 2010 is the year when the multi-million project to provide technology at the fingertips of students in the city would be implemented under the national e-governance project.
“Come 2010 and all schools and colleges in Chandigarh would be totally automated. Students will not only have computers on their study tables but would also be able to access the internet in their classrooms,” Bhatia said.
Education department officials said the move will shore up education standards in the union territory - which has emerged as the biggest educational hub in the northern states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh in the past few decades.
There are 103 government schools in Chandigarh, catering to over 100,000 students.
Unlike the general perception in the country of government schools not doing too well and lacking in facilities, some of the leading government schools here are much sought after, especially for classes 9 to 12.

Chandigarh: As the cut-off percentage for admissions in various colleges in chandigarh has increased, it has become difficult for the students scoring average marks to seek admission in the college of their choice. The GGDSD college -sector32, announced the first cut off list for admission in various undergraduate commerce programs on tuesday.
The cutoff is higher than last year even though one additional unit was added to BCom, BBA and BCA courses respectively. The first cutoff figure for BCom-1 is 97.8 % without mathematics and 93.8 % with mathematics for general pool and 93.2 per cent without mathematics and 89.2 per cent with mathematics for UT pool.
The main reason for the increase in Cutoffs is the increase in number of students scoring marks above 90%.
