Engg seats to be increased: CM

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Chandigarh: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said seats in technical and engineering institutes in the state would be increased to one lakh in the next two years to provide ample opportunities to the youth to get technical education.

The Chief Minister, who was addressing the Chhotu Ram Jayanti Samaroh organised by the Jat Shiksha Samiti at Rohtak yesterday, said the number of seats in technical and engineering institutes had already been increased from 23,000 to 53,000 in the past three years.

Hooda also launched a scathing attack on those who had earlier tried to keep Deenbandhu Sir Chhotu Ram in the background “so as to highlight the name of their own father”. He said such politicians could never be well-wishers of Haryana.

He said Chhotu Ram had always struggled to ensure justice to the weak, the down-trodden, farmers and labourers.

The CM paid rich tributes to Deenbandhu Sir Chhotu Ram and said while following his high ideals, the state government had given priority to expansion of quality education facilities.

He said Deenbandhu Sir Chhotu Ram realised that lack of educational facilities was one of the main causes of backwardness and had played an important role in promotion of education, especially in rural areas.

12 acres allotted for Panchkula dumping ground

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Panchkula: The Panchkula Municipal Council has allotted 12 acre of land for a dumping ground. Residents have previously complained of garbage flowing on to the main road.

“It has been more than seven years since we shifted to Panchkula, thinking that it would be better than Chandigarh. But we are very disappointed, as despite several requests authorities have failed in shifting the illegal dumping ground from Sector 23, which is on way to all beyond-Ghaggar sectors of the city,” said Mukesh Gupta, a resident of Sector 25, Panchkula. He added the situation deteriorated further during the rains, when the entire area turned into a major source of disease.

A resident of the beyond-Ghaggar sectors echoed similar sentiments. She said the authorities have been approached many times but have failed to respond. “If nothing else, at least the authorities can respond so that we at least have some hope of seeing it removed in the future. We have had the garbage picked by a private contractor but this cannot be a regular feature,” said Seema Verma, a resident of Sector 26.

The land for the dumping ground has been allotted in a village beyond MC limits. MC executive officer O P Sihag said: “Land was allotted recently in a low lying area of Jhurewala village, which is some distance from Sector 23. HUDA also plans to set up a solid waste management plant, for which a contract has also been recently awarded.”

Sihag added work was in full swing and residents would be able to see the results shortly.
