Chandigarh lad to head for golf World Championship

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Chandigarh: City boy Rahul Bakshi has made it to the Indian junior team for the World Team Championship after finishing second in the Asia qualifying round at Damai Laut Golf and Country Club in Malaysia from January 23 to 25. Exactly a week ago, Rahul had won the All India Amateur title at Chandigarh.

While most 17-year-olds are figuring out which career to choose and what the future holds for them, Rahul has barrelled through the national circuit with the same determination that he shows on the golf course.

“It feels good to be a part of the Indian team for the World Championship,” he said.

“The competition was tough and with only two teams qualifying for the World Championship, we wanted to finish at least second. The fact that our team lost to Korea by only three strokes in the overall score will help us put up a better performance in the World Championship,” said the 17-year-old.

Rahul Bakshi is the only junior golfer to have won both the All India junior title and the All India amateur title.

Lukewarm beginning for Modern Laundry Mart

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Chandigarh: Ten days after it was inaugurated, a drier extractor at the Modern Laundry Mart in Sector 15 is lying idle after the Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) from where it was receiving power broke. Even as the officials concerned have no time to repair the fault, even the two machines installed for commercial usage failed to accommodate the 16 dhobhis working there.

The mart owners had claimed that with the start of the facility, washing clothes would become convenient. The dhobis working there however claim otherwise.

Ajay Kanojia, General Secretary of Chandigarh Dhobhi Mahasabha, said two machines were not sufficient to accommodate all the 16 dhobhis. He said as they were using the machines for commercial purposes, one gets only one-and-half hour to use the facility which was not sufficient.

While the commercial operation of machines face rough weather, the lone coin operated machine, where one can wash 10-15 clothes by paying Rs 10, is gaining popularity. On an average, 25-30 people are using the coin-operated machine.

When contacted, Executive Engineer (Electrical) Surinder Singh Kandhola said they have not received any complaint regarding the damage to the MCB. The fault, if any, would be repaired on Tuesday, he said.

Two-room houses being built for slum-dwellers

Panchkula: Panchkula is all set to be a slum-free district in the near future if the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme is implemented successfully.

The district administration has decided to construct more than 7,000 two-room houses for slums-dwellers of Panchkula, Pinjore and Kalka, for which a sum of Rs 52.62 crore has already been approved by the central government. While 20 per cent of total cost will be borne by the house owners, the state government will fund the rest of the Rs 65.77-crore project. While the work at five sites in Panchkula has already started, the money will be released this week for the houses at Pinjore and Kalka.

The implementation of the scheme will not only help in the face lift of the district, it will also benefit HUDA as the authority will be able to get its prime land back which has been usurped by slums, said Panchkula deputy commissioner Rajinder Kataria.

At present, Panchkula has one dozen slums areas with a population of more than 43,000. These include Azad Colony, Matu Ram Colony, Ramesh Kumar Colony, Babu Ram Colony, Madrasi Colony, Makhan Singh Colony, Ambedkar Colony, Kharag Mangoli, Sham Lal Colony, Rajiv Colony and Indira Colony.
