BJP, BSP to go it alone in mayoral elections

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

Chandigarh: Political equations seem to be changing in Chandigarh with both the BJP and the BSP contemplating fielding their own candidates in the mayoral elections.

With the year-old alliance of BJP-SAD with the BSP headed towards a split, the Congress is suddenly finding itself in a comfortable position.

While senior BJP and BSP leaders have so far failed to reach any consensus on mayoral candidates, the Congress is all set to declare its candidate on December 25.

The differences in the BJP-SAD alliance and the BSP emerged after the latter projected Jatinder Bhatia as its candidate. Recently, two BJP leaders had met senior BSP leader Harmohan Dhawan, who had categorically told them that his party wants a BSP councillor to be the Mayor this time.

“Last time, we had supported BJP-SAD candidate Harjinder Kaur on the condition that they will support our candidate this time. But it seems they are backtracking on the promise and have made up their mind to field their own candidate,” said Dhawan.
