Policing fumbles without media glare

Friday, December 7th, 2007

Chandigarh: The media-savvy Chandigarh Police seem to have forgotten their “initiatives” to curb traffic violations after their pictures were published in the newspapers. The reality is contrary to Chandigarh Police’s claims that they do enough to curb traffic violations in the city.

About a fortnight ago, Chandigarh Traffic Police had launched a concept of challaning roadways buses which do not stop at the designated spots (bus-shelters), not only causing acute traffic disruption, but also pose as a fatal threat to motorists and pedestrians on the roads. For instance, the Piccadily roundabout has claimed three lives in the last few months, out of which two were caused by buses which had not stopped at the designated spots.

Every year, more than a dozen fatal accidents are caused by roadways buses, which are yet going unchecked. Chandigarh Newsline has clicked numerous pictures of roadways buses violating traffic norms by not stopping at the designated spots. Even though traffic police officials have earlier claimed that they would continue their drive against the buses, it appears the efforts have waned soon after their pictures were published in the newspapers.
