Study tour only in name
Chandigarh
A seven-day educational trip meant for 15 education officials and teachers to Singapore was nothing more than a jaunt. The group spent five days in Singapore and two in Bangladesh.

Singaporeans are known for discipline and punctuality, but most of the group members would generally turn up late for interaction sessions.

No one in the group could tell what they had learnt from the tour. The infrastructure and luxurious ambience was the only topic on which they were happy to talk about. No one could tell the exact name of the three schools that they visited in Singapore.

Debate on economy: Parties splurge on buck-passing

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

Chandigarh: As the SAD-BJP tests the waters before taking a final call on withdrawing freebies in Punjab, at least partially, the Congress’ stand on the issue could dampen the ruling party’s build-up of political will towards any such move.

Leader of Opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal today said the Congress feared that the government could roll back its decision on subsidies and octroi in the wake of dismal financial position of the state. The treasury benches, which included Finance Minister Manpreet Badal, found themselves in a precarious situation, looking for words after Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira sought a pointed reply from the minister on the governments’ plans to withdraw freebies.

Participating in the discussion on the Punjab Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (Amendment) Bill, 2007, Bhattal, who gave a blow-by-blow account of state finances, blamed the SAD for the mess.

Manpreet, however, stood firm and maintained that the state finances were improving. He cited a record excise revenue increase of 12 per cent besides an increase in VAT collections. “The politics in Punjab has been revolving around other issues and not economics. We need to bring the economic agenda on the political centre stage,” he said.

Teachers in Kapurthala boycott training session

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

Chandigarh: Teachers in Kapurthala district today boycotted their training programme— which is being conducted during their winter vacation from December 24 to December 31 under Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan. Teachers protested in Jalandhar too, though they attended the programme.

Notably, as various teachers’ organisations were against seminars during vacation, the Punjab government had decided that while this year’s programme would be conducted as per schedule, appropriate adjustment would be made for the next academic session.

Sucha Singh, Kapurthala president of Democratic Teachers’ Front, said they have boycotted the first day of the training programme and would stay away for all eight days.

Surjit Singh, a union member in Jalandhar, said though they had undertaken the training programme, they were against it.

As per the Union government’s directions, it is mandatory to conduct 20-day teachers’ training programme during each academic session. For this academic year, 12 days’ training was conducted during summer vacation and for the remaining eight days’, a programme was scheduled for December-end.

The Punjab government had recently clarified that the training schedule will not be changed as all arrangements had been made.

To Santa, with love

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

Chandigarh: This one was a close call. One that had us face-to-face with the man behind the Claus — a smart man, who unlike our picture perfect image, isn’t a chubby cute fatso, but has the same motto, “to make people happy. To make them believe in the good that is still there in this world,” smiles Santa Singh, a 35-year-old restaurant captain at Hotel Prabhat Inn, who has been posing as Santa for the past 10 years now.

“I cancelled my off this month on account of Christmas,” he tells us. Santa Singh recently lost his mother, but then that has not marred the festive spirit, “The smile on the kids’ faces will help me forget all else,” Santa says, as he moves on to a group of students singing ‘Ho! Ho! Ho!’ and the bell in his hands playing ‘jingle bell’. The sweets distributed and greetings exchanged, “We get somewhere between Rs 200 to Rs 1,000 per day for acting as Santa,” he reels. The earnings depends on the kind of people Santa meets, 24-year-old Deepak Kumar of Mayur Dress Company, Industrial Area, tells us. With his duty hours stretching to over 12-hours a day, “We do complete round-ups of the city — from markets, cinema halls to parties. More than the monetary benefit, it is the smiles of the children that we earn,” Deepak says.

First-timer Manjit Thakur from Kangra (HP), a 21-year-old waiter at Hotel Yellow Chili, too, is happy playing Santa. “I am enjoying each and every minute of it. Not only the kids, but the grown-ups also rush to meet me. I have never got so much attention in my life,” says Manjit, taking off his Santa mask. Agrees Nirmal Kumar, a 19-year-old from from Nepal, who is posing as Santa for the second time, “I am a common man. This day makes a star out of me.”
