Minor girls are city’s first two dengue victims

Chandigarh: In what is suspected to be the first death in the city due to dengue, Nagma, a 13-year-old who was admitted to PGI on Monday, died yesterday. However, doctors did not confirm the cause of death.

Nagma’s father Muzahir Hussain said Nagma’s kidney failed after she had high fever. “The fever was so high that the blood circulation in her kidneys stopped,” he said. The father added, “Doctors at the PGI said that the death was due to dengue.”

PGI doctors refused to confirm the cause of death. “She was suffering from dengue. But since no post-mortem examination was conducted, it is difficult to establish the cause of death,” said Dr M S Bains, Director Health Services, Chandigarh.

Meanwhile, dengue claimed another life in the city this evening. Another 13-year-old girl, Priyanka, who is a resident of Sector 37, Chandigarh, was brought to GH-16 from where she was referred to PGI. However, even before her test reports could be received, the girl died.
