New Light Society residents clamour for better living conditions

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Chandigarh: The residents of New Light Society in Sector 51 clamour for better living conditions. Reason. The residents of Colony No. 5, which is adjacent to the society, relieve themselves in the open as a result of which there is a persistent foul smell all around.

The mobile toilets, however, have been provided by the municipal corporation to the colony residents. Moreover, open drainage is aggravating the problem for those living in the flats. The entire area in front of the society flats has become a breeding ground for the mosquitoes.

The authorities concerned have failed to pay attention towards the problem that is posing serious threats to the health of people living in the vicinity.

“The administration is giving big advertisements to create clean environment in the residential areas to prevent the spread of malaria, dengue and chickungunya, but what are they doing to solve the issue here,” said C M Malhotra, a resident.

He had bought a flat after putting in all of his retirement benefits into it. His family has, however, refused to shift there due to the bad sanitation in the area.

Residents wary of new Hallomajra housing project

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Chandigarh: While the UT Administration has decided to come up with 2,400 dwelling units in Hallomajra, the residents of the area are apprehensive about the administration acquiring their land for the project. The officials of Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) said they would conduct a survey and test the soil only after the proposed 36.32 acres of land earmarked for the purpose was handed over to them.

These 2,400 dwelling units comprising one-room, two-room and three-room flats are in addition to the 8,064 flats that the CHB plans to construct at Maloya, Mauli Jagran, Sector 38, Sector 49 and Ramdarbar. CHB has already received some good responses for these projects from the bidders.

Chairman of CHB Mohanjit Singh told Newsline that the administration came up with the idea of the Hallomajra flats to cater to the needs of people coming to the city in the wake of the demand created by new projects being set up there.

“Our effort will be to provide LIG and HIG flats proposed at Hallomajra at reasonable rates. The costs of these flats will be worked out only after considering the cost of land, developmental cost besides other charges and interest rates,” he added.

Mohanjit Singh, however, clarified that the proposed three-bedroom HIG flats in Hallomajra will be sold at the market price prevailing at the time of completion of project. He said all efforts will be made by the CHB to complete the project within the stipulated time.

“Anti-vehicle theft devices are quite a rage as the number of car thefts is increasing in the city,” said Ashok Verma, a resident of Sector 8, Chandigarh.

Deshbandhu Sahay, a resident of Sector 21, said, “Precaution is better than cure. We cannot stop car thefts, but we can at least safegaurd our vehicles by installing such devices.”

In guise of gods, for a few days

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Chandigarh: They make characters of Ramayan come alive year after year. Be it the resounding laughter of Ravan, the devotion of Sita or the godliness of Ram, these Ramleela actors deliver their parts with panache. Rather, they make the parts appear so real that people touch their feet to take blessings.

Shiv Shankar, who owns a newspaper agency, has been playing Laxman for the past 10 years. He says, “I started taking part in Ramleela in 1992 when I was in Class VIII. From playing a soldier to rishis, I now play Laxman. I feel a change in myself when I am playing the part. People start touching my feet. Through all this I just remember God and carry on with my part.”

Shankar swears by divine intervention in his work owing to his participation in Ramleela. He says, “I was a newspaper delivery boy. Five years ago I became the owner of a newspaper agency. Now there are 10 people working under me. This is true for all the members of the Ramleela. They have made tremendous progress in life.”

Every year these people take 10 days off from work and spend the time being a part of Ramleela. Says Rajesh Chouhan, who has been playing different parts since 1987, “The rehearsals begin two to three months prior to the event. During the 10 days that we perform, we spend all our time at the venue. The kitchen is shifted here and all of us eat together. We also abstain from eating non-vegetarian food. We don’t even take onion.”

And there are some whose families have been acting in Ramleelas from generations. Vicky Sharma and his brother have played the role of Ram and Ravan, respectively, for more than a decade. And the actors work for free. A shop owner, Lalit Sharma, has been playing Sita for numerous years. His father earlier played the role.

To ease traffic, roads to run parallel to Madhya Marg

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Chandigarh: After approving installation of traffic lights at all roundabouts, the UT Administration has given a go ahead to the proposal of utilising slow carriageways along V2 roads. These slow carriageways would, however, be restricted to only two-wheelers, bicycles and rickshaws. A senior official said plans are in place for using the slow carriageways along the V-2 roads (like the Madhya Marg) as a parallel road running along with the main road.

The widening of these roads is not being contemplated as of now due to loss of greenery along the road. The V-2 roads include main city roads like the Madhya Marg, Dakshin Marg.

For the initial planning, slow carriageways along the Madhya Marg are being considered and the architecture department has been asked to explore feasibility of the plans.

“Traffic lights would be installed at all slip roads at V-2 roads. Traffic would be coordinated so that slow carriageways become a separate parallel road in itself,” said the official. As per plans, traffic slipways would be able to provide two separate directions to the traffic- one, for providing a straight corridor for slow traffic and another for providing way for slow traffic to go to the opposite direction along a roundabout.

Theft at RBI: Police suspect Class IV employee involved

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Chandigarh: Contradictory statements by a Class IV employee working at Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Sector 17 branch, has moved the needle of suspicion towards him. On Friday, RBI Treasurer S P Janjua had reported that Rs 2.82 lakh was missing from vault number 2 of the bank.

Rajesh, a resident of Pinjore, was picked up for questioning in the wee hours today. Sources said every statement by him, made in police custody, contradicts his movements captured by the CCTV cameras.

According to Rajesh, he left the office building after informing his manager. However, the manager denied Rajesh’s claim. Rajesh had cited his wife’s illness as the reason for his leaving office early on October 12, the day the RBI Treasurer reported the matter to the police. However, on questioning his wife the police learnt that she was not keeping well for the last few days.

Rajesh had said that he walked his way from the bank to ISBT-17, from where he boarded a bus to Pinjore and that it took him more than three hours to reach home. However, CCTV footage showed Rajesh leaving the bank’s building on a motorcycle. On questioning, Rajesh also could not clearly explain the time duration of more than 3 hours which he took to reach Pinjore, while under normal circumstances Pinjore is only about 30-40 minutes drive from Chandigarh. Rajesh had claimed taking medicines for his ill wife which he said had taken him so long to reach his house. On the other hand, his wife denied Rajesh’s claims and told police that she had already got her medicines four days ago.

It has been over four days since RBI Treasurer S P Janjua reported a theft of Rs 2.82 lakh from the bank’s vault number 2. The city police are still groping in dark with no substantial clue, except Rajesh’s contradictory statements.

One more in BSP fold: Shyama Negi

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Chandigarh: After roping in former Union Minister Harmohan Dhawan, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) today further strengthened its position in the city after former Senior Deputy Mayor Shyama Negi joined the party fold along with her supporters. The move is being considered as a big blow to the Congress, of which Negi was a part earlier, in the local political circle.

Besides her others who joined the party include Rajiv Kathuria, Jatinder Kapoor and Karan Sharda, all former leaders of the Bajrang Dal, industrialists Jitender Jindal and Anil Garg and Ranjeet Kaur, deputy president of Lok Janshakti Party.

Shyama Negi, former president (women wing) of Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), distanced herself from the Congress after the party denied her ticket to contest the elections. She had lost the election from Ward No. 10 as an independent candidate. Against 6,500 votes polled to her in 2001 Municipal Corporation elections, she got only 670 votes during the 2006 election.

“Poor voting was the result of my being a candidate from a new ward, besides the Congress leaders left no stone unturned to ensure my defeat. After the Congress forced my ouster from the party, I was approached by the BJP but I preferred to join the BSP as I have old association with Harmohan Dhawan,” she told Newsline after joining BSP.

Today’s move is more like homecoming of Shyama Negi as before joining the Congress, she was in Chandigarh Vikas Manch (CVM) of Harmohan Dhawan. Both Negi and Dhawan had joined the Congress party together.
