Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

SAS Nagar, October 1 Even a temple was not spared in the latest strike by burglars when they made away with jewellery and cash worth Rs 50 thousand from the Hari Mandir temple, Phase V. According to information, the burglars broke open the charity box which contained Rs 30 thousand in cash. They also took away gold and silver chhattars (small umbrella like knick-knacks) hanging over the idols in the temple.

Shankar Shastri, Pujari of the temple, told Newsline that the burglars tried to enter the temple by breaking the exhaust fan for the side park adjacent to the temple but after failing in this attempt, they broke the lock of the main gate and entered. He said that three pujaris were sleeping near the gate but they couldn’t hear the noise.

He said the burglars decamped with Rs 30 thousand in cash along with three silver chhattars hanging over the idols of Baba Balknath, a gold chhattar and silver ornaments worth around Rs 20 thousand. He said he came to know about the incident when he woke up for worship at around 4.00 am in the morning and found the lock of the main gate broken.

He informed president of the Ram Lila committee MS Billa and BJP leader Ravinder Singh who further informed the police. The MC of the area, Suresh Kumar Lakki, condemned the theft and asked for police personnel to be deployed at religious places.

House of contention: MC asks DC to pay outstanding rent

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

SAS Nagar: The Mohali Municipal Council has written a letter to the Deputy Commissioner Mohali H I S Grewal, seeking the rent arrears of the house he is staying in.

The rent for the accommodation, house number 1985 in Municipal Complex, Phase-V, is Rs 47,900 per month. He took possession of the house in April 2007 and the amount outstanding is Rs 2.39.

The Executive officer of the Mohali MC, Jagir Singh Thind, had issued the letter on August 24 asking for the payment, but the DC has not yet deposited the amount with the MC Mohali.

It may be recalled that the day the previous EO had vacated the premises, the president of the Mohali MC, Rajinder Singh Rana, and the DC Mohali had both tried to take possession of the house and had moved their household items to the house.

Following the controversy, the house was locked up and the president MC later gave up the possession of the house, which was then handed over to the DC in April 2007.

The DC Mohali, H I S Grewal, when contacted on the issue, said the revenue department would pay the rent of the house as he has been provided rent-free accommodation in Mohali.

Ayurvedic, Unani practitioners served show-cause notices

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

Chandigarh: Practitioners of Ayurvedic and Unani systems of medicine cannot advertise or make publicity claims in the media as per the Indian Medicine Standards of Professional Conduct and Code of Ethics, 1984, framed under the Punjab Ayurvedic and Unani Practitioners Act, 1963.

But with the Board of Ayurvedic and Unani Systems of Medicines, Punjab, not caring a fig, rules are being openly flouted.

The practitioners have been regularly making tall claims, along with their photographs, of curing even cancer in their advertisements in newspapers.

An organisation, Human Empowerment League of Punjab (HELP), used the whip of the Right to Information (RTI) Act to whack and wake up the board, which has now issued show-cause notices to all such practitioners.

Parwinder Singh Kitna of HELP said he had written a complaint to the board, Punjab Health Minister, Principal Secretary, Department of Medical Education, and Registrar of Punjab Medical Council on August 24 last, mentioning how such practitioners have been claiming to treat cancer, infertility, baldness, leukoderma, migraine, obesity, arthritis, kidney failure, heart, etc. He had also attached clippings of such advertisements.

Last bite with shweta keswani & alexx o’nell

Chandigarh: We went to Mangi Ferra to celebrate my birthday a few weeks ago. We had just begun rehearsing for Nach Baliye 3, and though we were extremely tired, we decided to go out for dinner. The restaurant was cosy and romantic, with candles lit all over the place. For starters, we feasted on jalapeno poppers, which are stuffed with cheese and served with tartar sauce and a cheesy dip. Then we had a delicious crab soup. For mains, we ordered a vegetarian pizza which was thin, crisp and delicious with vegetables and tomatoes as toppings. We both enjoyed our Long Island Ice Teas and, after a while, we ordered chicken breast in red wine, a dish we both enjoy.

We were stuffed after eating so much and decided to skip dessert. Though it was a hectic day, the dinner was a fabulous and a sweet end to the day.

‘I am what I am‘

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

Chandigarh: WHERE does one begin? From chapter one where he corrects a ‘google’ error, and states his name as Dharam Dev Anand, or jet-set straight to 2003, in the heart of Manhattan, where a mind faster than a missile paused for a rare second, and in that peculiar moment of contemplation, decided to pen a chapter…where does one begin to write about a legend larger than life, where does one begin to do justice to someone as big and alive as Dev Anand? “The age of 19, when the Frontier Mail took me to the Mecca of films, Bombay,” pens Dev Saab, as he chugs from his hometown, Gurdaspur, in ‘43, to the land where dreams come true. There was struggle, “but struggling is energy, and dreams, a necessity. To live, you must execute them, to execute, you must be self-educated, self-disciplined and immensely talented,” Dev Anand turns a few pages of his life.

“Sixty-two years is a long, long span of time, and I was chased by many to write my biography, but this was something I had to do myself, and I did,” says Dev Saab while releasing his book, ‘Romancing with Life’, at Hotel Mount View. Snatches from his memory, he calls it a screenplay of his life…”an honest and bold account of my life. I never wanted to talk about myself, I am not an egoist, but in a fit of a decisive moment, I penned a chapter, I liked it and wrote some more. You see, when you are known to the world, everyday is a chapter.” Chapters that run ‘spool after spool’ with his indulgences, his many loves and consequent heartbreaks, on a parallel track with politics fuelled with a fiery thought of marching to the Parliament and be more than a hand-raiser.With defeats and setbacks which gave him enough reason to strike back, with resounding success and glory that catapulted him to dizzy heights, chapters that talk of best friends, ‘langotia yaar’ like Guru Dutt, of pretty women like Zeenat, paragraphs that explain his thought and films.
