Farmer killed due to land dispute

CHANDIGARH: A land dispute between a farmer and his two sons led to the murder of another farmer who had taken the land on lease in Sonepat on Tuesday.

Sources said Om Prakash of Aterana village had leased out his land to one Dhanraj of Manoli village. When the latter was ploughing the fields, he was attacked by Rajender and Rajbir, sons of Om Prakash.

The accused also injured their father and his second wife. While the accused have been arrested, their accomplices are absconding.

Youth found dead in Mohali was US resident

Mohali: The youth found dead in Phase VII here last night has been identified as Yadvinder Singh, a resident of USA. He had come to India some days ago and was living with his cousin, a head constable with the Chandigarh Police in Sector 26.

His cousin, after reading newspapers this morning, contacted the Mohali police. He identified the victim as 24-year-old Yadvinder. He said, Yadvinder left home yesterday morning in his car and there was no word from him the whole day. His car was reportedly found in Sector 5, Chandigarh. It was unlocked.

Yadvinder was supposed to return to the USA on November 4. Matour SHO Joginderpal Singh said the boy did not know anyone in Mohali and had no reason to be here. The post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow.

TN resident booked on theft charge

Chandigarh: A Tamil Nadu resident was allegedly caught while stealing a wallet from a car in Sector 7.

Gurdev Singh of Ropar has reported to the police that M. Ramesh had stolen his wallet containing Rs 1,000, a voter card and a PAN card from his car last evening. The car was parked in Sector 7. A case has been registered.

Theft cases

Atul Garg of Sector 40-A has lodged a complaint with the police that his Indica car (CH-04-A-7290), parked in front of his house, was stolen last night.

In another incident, Ajay Sharma of Modern Housing Complex, Mani Majra, reported that his Bajaj Chetak scooter (CH-03-C-4849) was stolen from Sector 22 on October 27.

Two cases of theft have been registered.

Cylinder stolen

Amit Sahai of PGI Colony has reported that a gas cylinder was stolen from his Maruti car (CH-01-Y-2186) that was parked in front of his house yesterday. A case has been registered.

BSNL nos. under hammer

Chandigarh: The Punjab circle of the BSNL has began the auction of VIP numbers of its new mobile series 9464. The details of the scheme can be accessed at www.punjab.bsnl.co.in.

The auction, which got under way on October 28, will continue till November 4.

Meanwhile, the waiting list of broadband connections in Sectors 4, 7, 34, 37 and 49, Phase II of the Industrial Area (Chandigarh), and Phases IV and X in Mohali and Kharar exchanges will be cleared in 15 days.

Diwali stall coupons from today

Chandigarh: The MC has decided to issue prepaid coupons to those who want to set up temporary stalls on Diwali.

The coupons will be issued at the MC office and sub-office, Mani Majra, from tomorrow until November 6.

For Mani Majra and Mauli Jagran, the coupons will be issued at the sub-office, Mani Majra. For Sector 17, the coupons will be issued to original shopkeepers of the sector on November 2 and November 5.

For the convenience of public, eight stalls shall be put up at the MC office and one at the NAC, Mani Majra, for the purpose.

Marla house owners, traders meet adviser

Chandigarh: A delegation of the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal, headed by its president Charanjiv Singh, today met Pradip Mehra, UT adviser.

The delegation submitted a memorandum of demands of the trading community, a press note said here today.

Mehra sought suggestions, especially for reforms in the obsolete building bylaws and rent legislation. He told the delegation that beautification of markets would be given top priority.

Meanwhile, solution to the demands of marla house owners for need-based changes may be in sight.

The UT adviser, Pradip Mehra, today held a meeting with various organisations of residents to ascertain the demands of the residents.

The meeting was attended by senior officials of the administration.

Representatives of the Federation of Sector Welfare Association and the Chandigarh Marla/Flats Houses Resident Welfare Association told him that while major relaxations in new sectors had been allowed, the old sectors which had the maximum number of marla houses, were denied these.

Cops’ driving skills tested

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh traffic police today organised a workshop for drivers of the police department in liaison with the Motor Sport Association (a member of the traffic advisory committee) at the Children Traffic Park, Sector 23.

The eyesight of drivers was checked by doctors from Guru Harkrishan Sahib Eye Hospital Trust, Sohana. They were also given medicine free of cost.

A written driving test was taken with the help of an LCD projector.

Quarterly meetings to review crime

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh administration has decided to hold quarterly meetings to review the crime situation in the city.

The meeting would be chaired by the home secretary, Krishna Mohan. The meeting would take into account factors such as crime, traffic, training administration, police-public interface modernisation and housing.

Devise strategy to curb snatching, IG tells cops

Chandigarh: The UT inspector-general of police (IG) today directed his force to devise a strategy to curb cases of snatching and vehicle theft, at a quarterly crime meeting held at the police headquarters in Sector 9 here.

The IG told Chandigarh Tribune that the crime graph of the city was discussed at the meeting and officials were given instructions to improve their functioning.

Besides, they were asked to gear up for the Panjab University Campus Student’s Council election on November 5 and make prior arrangements for the festival season. The IG also reportedly pulled up certain station house officers of the force for their failure to dispose of complaints promptly.

Aiming to improve the basic functioning of the police, the IG asked his men to lay emphasis on improving the beat box system and police patrolling.

He said beat system and police patrolling were essential components of policing, as policemen on duty were direct in contact with public and sources of information.

Central govt staff strike work

Chandigarh: Central government employees organisations observed a one-day strike in support of their demands here today.

Under the banner of the coordination committee of the central government employees and workers, Chandigarh, the associations of the office of the accountant general (A and E), department of posts, central ground water board and department of income tax and central excise observed strike.

Besides, the Punjab state industrial development corporation, survey of India and various defence organisations organised lunch-hour rallies outside their offices.

Their main demands included the grant of interim relief of at least Rs 1,000 to all central government employees, implementation of the recommendations of the sixth pay commission with effect from January 1, 2006, implementation of pending 16 awards of the board of arbitration, removal of quantum ceiling on bonus, lifting of ban on recruitment, scrapping of the PFRDA Bill and setting up of the judicial commission for the gramin dak sewaks.
