Nayar: Parties cashing in on Bhagat Singh

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Chandigarh: Veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar today rued the fact that political parties were dividing Bhagat Singh amongst them. “If he is shown wearing a hat, the Jan Sangh and the RSS claim him to be theirs and if shown wearing a turban, the Akalis and the Congress step in.”

Delivering the inaugural address at a seminar on the martyr here today, he also assailed those teaching history to youngsters.

“The NCERT is a political body and keeps changing the notions of history,” Politicians, he said, had no place in books and an autonomous body needed to be formed to look at history with impartiality.

Eminent historian Prof V.N. Datta dwelled on Mahatma Gandhi’s perspective on Bhagat Singh’s revolutionary ideology. “Gandhi saw Bhagat Singh’s ways as a threat to his own beliefs. That is why he elevated Jawaharlal Nehru, insisting he adopt a more moderate approach.”

He added that Gandhi had admiration for Bhagat Singh’s patriotism but that was separate from his beliefs.

During the technical sessions, city-based political scientist Prof Harish K. Puri spoke on “Exploring the Legend of Bhagat Singh” wherein he underlined that among the martyrs of the freedom struggle, Bhagat Singh’s popularity was “amazing”.

FDI needed for infrastructural growth: CJ

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Chandigarh: Stressing that foreign direct investment (FDI) is the mantra of self-reliance and self-sustaining economy, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Vijender Jain said yesterday that such investment was also needed so that infrastructure could be developed at a fast pace.

The Chief Justice, speaking at a seminar on “International law on foreign trade” held at the CII headquarters here, highlighted the fact that India was still having a deficit of $20 billion in its current account with a trade deficit of $50-60 billion. This was the scenario despite the remittances to the tune of $24 billion.

“I feel that when we allow FDI investment, we can not act as a protectionist. But sovereign nation has to take into consideration the interest of the people who are going to be affected by the FDI. If it adversely affects the recipients then that areas should be left for domestic regulation. There are certain issues which we as judges and lawyers have to answer,” the Chief Justice said.

Pravin H. Parekh, honorary organising secretary, ILA (Indian Branch), said: “There is a need to re-examine the current standard legal agreements that define the bilateral investment treaties.”

Revisited - Guru Nanak’s creative mysticism

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Chandigarh: Guru Nanak’s thought has influenced a string of literary and religious works but none as “bold” and off-track as S.S. Bhatti’s book on the subject.

True to his style, Bhatti, former principal of the Chandigarh College of Architecture, has returned to question the long-held perceptions and laid down something entirely new.

<%image(20070928-CreativeM.jpg|100|143|)%>

“Guru Nanak was a fragment of the divine on the earth. He never sought to preach or to prove a point. He simply revealed the divine truth using shabds, ” says Bhatti, who has studied Gurbani from the architectural parameters and has called Guru Nanak the most creative mystic.

This and much more forms part of his latest, yet-to-be-released book titled, “Guru Nanak’s Bani: Revelation, Mysticism, Creativity”, published by Harman Publishing House, New Delhi.

The study follows a clear line of thought, with the author, through, Gurbani, seeking to show how Guru Nanak’s “bani” is pure revelation and no mythology, mysticism, muse or metaphysics.
