Institutes proving to be channels to Australian universities

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

Chandigarh: Students with ‘average’ marks, yet desiring to study in Australia, are fulfiling their dreams by taking admissions in various institutes in the country, instead of universities. The reason being not being able to fulfil the requisite conditions.

Manager of IDP Education India Private Limited, Anita Abbi says, “There are many students who do not fulfill the minimum requirement of marks for admissions to universities in Australia. Many prefer the institutes as it is easier for them to adjust due to the lesser number of students. However, after a year they are able to get admission in the universities.”

The preference of students continue to lie in job-oriented courses like hospitality, commercial cookery, hair dressing etc. The courses ensure that students get Permanent Residence (PR) at the earliest. However, with rules to change soon, students will have to work in the particular field they choose for a year.

Dr Kuldeep Singh Sandhu from the Department of Management, Griffith Business School, says there are around 1000 Indian students studying in different universities.

University contemplating uniformity in fee structure

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

Chandigarh: Panjab University authorities are planning on bringing about uniformity in the various funds being charged along with tuition fees. At present, the amount of funds being charged from the students of University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Dental Institute and Departments having arts, sciences and other professional courses is different. The issue will be taken up in the Syndicate meeting to be held on September 13.

Though the admission fee, laboratory charges and other development charges will remain the same, there will be change in the other funds. For example, the admission fee, which is Rs 220 in UIET, Rs 180 in the Dental Institute and Rs 230 in all departments will now be fixed at Rs 230. The library security deposit, university sports fee and house examination fee will be fixed at Rs 230 each. The youth welfare fund will be increased to Rs 75 per annum, from Rs 60 being charged in UIET and BDS.

The other changes include student aid fund, medical fee, magazine campus reporter fee, student scholarship fee, environment fee, campus cleanliness fee, etc.

The uniformity in the funds will also lead to some increase in the amount already charged from different departments. Students of BDS will have to shell out more though.
