Cutting edge: IntraLase to give blade-free eye operations

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Chandigarh: Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator SF Rodrigues today inaugurated ‘IntraLase’, an advanced approach to customised laser vision correction at Grewal Eye Institute (GEI), Sector 9.

IntraLase is a 100 per cent blade-free approach to creating corneal flap, the thin flap of tissue that the doctor folds back in, in order to perform the LASIK procedure.

“Traditionally, doctors use an instrument called a microkeratome for the creation of corneal flaps. The microkeratome is a hand-held blade that moves across the eye, cutting the corneal flap as it goes,” explained Dr SPS Grewal, MD, GEI. “The IntraLase method, by contrast, enables the doctor to create the corneal flap without a blade ever touching the eye,” Dr Grewal said.

“The list of complications shrinks with this technology. Moreover, using laser makes sure that the inherent strength of the tissues inside the eyes remains intact,” Dr Grewal said.

Eye transplant is another area where IntraLase has brought a revolution. It shapes the donor cornea button precisely, for eye transplant procedures, said Dr Grewal. The procedure costs Rs 46,000 for one eye.

Consumer Forum tells HUDA to hand over Gurgaon plot to complainant

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Chandigarh: The District Consumer Forum has directed Chief Administrator, Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), to give immediate possession of a plot in Gurgaon to a city resident who has been struggling to get the allotment for the past ten years.

The Forum has also ordered HUDA a payment of Rs 25, 000 to the complainant as compensation on account of physical and mental harassment.

The complainant, Chander Pal Tyagi, resident of Sector 37 C was initially alloted plot 585 in Sector 23 A, Gurgaon in 1981.

The complainant had made total payment as per schedule with lost payment made in March 1991. But in April 1994, HUDA informed Chander Pal Tyagi that the plot in question was not available at the time of demarcation and therefore an alternative plot of the same size was being offered in Sector 10 A, Gurgaon.

However, the actual allotment of this alternative plot remained in abeyance and finally in April 1995, the complainant was intimated that he could choose an alternative plot (no 3394A) in the same sector.

Chander Pal Tyagi accepted and in spite of repeated reminders and requests, was not given the possession of the said plot.

Suicides: BJP seeks loan rebate for Haryana farmers

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Panchkula: The Haryana government should provide loans to poor farmers at not more than 4 per cent interest, said Rattan Lal Kataria, former Ambala MP and vice-president, BJP, Haryana state unit, at a press conference held at the party office in Sector 2, Panchkula, on Tuesday. The party members also demanded that the farmers of the state be provided with ample financial security in view of the spate of suicides.

“The glaring fact is that in the past three and a half years of the UPA government’s rule, around 1,15,000 farmers have committed suicide. Due to the wrong policies followed by government, the farmers had to take such drastic measures. Besides, in the NDA government, there was never a need to import wheat, rather, we sold wheat to other countries,” said Kataria in the conference.

He added that it was quite strange that the state which used to have surplus wheat, was forced to import it from other places because of the deficit.

The vice-president not only demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter, but also asked the government to come up with an answer to the Gohana episode that took place recently.
