Chandigarh: Lifestyle disorder time bomb is ticking in north India, as high prevalence of anaemia, increasing incidences of cardiovascular diseases and a high percentage of obesity and diabetes have been reported in the local population by the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) III.
According to the survey, anaemia has emerged as one of the biggest problems. About 82 per cent children between the age group of six months to six years are anaemic in Haryana and the figure is 80 per cent for Punjab, says survey.
“The number of anaemic adolescents and women are also very high. Anaemia or iron deficiency is an important indicator that why a majority of blood donors in Chandigarh are men,” said Dr Neelam Marwaha, Head of Department, Transfusion Medicine at PGI.
Dr Marwaha said, “Women in their reproductive age group should be healthy and eating well. But evidently, they are not eating enough iron rich food.”
As hospitals across the region celebrate National Nutrition Week from September 1 to 7, nutritionists feel that a change in dietary habits is the need of the hour.
