Dr Marwaha said, “Women in their reproductive age group should be healthy and eating well. But evidently, they are not eating enough iron rich food.”

As hospitals across the region celebrate National Nutrition Week from September 1 to 7, nutritionists feel that a change in dietary habits is the need of the hour.

Should we shun women in the armed forces?

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

Chandigarh: Armed Forces remained one of the last bastions of male supremacy in India till about 15 years ago. Since the British rule, women were not accepted into the forces with medical corps and military nursing services being the only exception.

By the 1990s, with changes in society and international trends, employability of women in non-combative roles of the armed forces was considered by the Indian government and the first batch of women officers were inducted in 1992. No woman has so far been inducted to the fighting arms of the Indian Army.

Government policy on the subject laid down that women officers would be initially granted SSC for a period of 5 years, at the end of which Permanent Commission would be offered to willing officers. However, the government failed to deliver on its promise. After the first batch approached the end of the 5-year tenure, the engagement period was increased to 10 years, and later on to 15 years.

Now it appears that the government is unable to implement the policy of granting Permanent Commission to women officers, ostensibly under pressure from a section of the Armed forces itself.

For example, the internal policies of IAF have maintained a divergent direction on the subject. As per their in-house policy, the IAF does not have a requirement to grant Permanent Commission to SSC officers. The policy even created a novel way of denying extension to the pre-existing SSC (W) officers in 2006, by steeply raising the benchmark of ACR grading.

Chandigarh: Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
CAST: Amitabh Bachchan, Mohanlal, Ajay Devgan, Prashant Raj, Sushmita Sen, Nisha Kothari, Sushant Singh
DIRECTOR: Ram Gopal Varma

If you meddle with history, prepare to be shot. Ram Gopal Varma rejigs Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay for 2007, and comes up with a clunker.

Back in 1975, Bollywood was struggling to come up with an idiom which would be right for the times. The one-size-fits-all shoe had dropped, and most movies were dying like flies. And then along came Sholay, which packed everything in its punch - thrilling action, romance, comedy, tragedy. It was a smorgasbord, a veritable feast, the like of which we had never seen before. And judging by what RGV has made of it, we never will.

You go in, girded for difference. The bitter spat between the Sippys and RGV, and the fallout, has been publicised well enough for us to know that the latter has transplanted Ramgarh to Mumbai, that Jai is Raj (Prashant), Veeru is Heero (Ajay), Thakur Baldev Singh is Narasimha (Mohanlal), Basanti is Ghunghroo (Nisha). And Gabbar Singh — was there ever a more satisfying name for a villa–n-is Babban ( Amitabh Bachchan).

BLAME GAME :MC, ADMN SPAR OVER FUNDS, POWER

Panchkula: “If the Municipal Council, Panchkula, is to be blamed for misappropriation of funds, use of sub-standard material and misuse of power, then the Panchkula administration, too, is equally responsible for the same,” said MC president Manvir Kaur Gill while addressing a press conference at Hotel Pallavi in Sector 5, today.

She said it was the Panchkula administration that was responsible for spoiling the image of the MC.

“If misappropriation of funds was being done by the MC, why did the administration not stop them before. It is all politically motivated and if the MC is to be blamed in any case, the administration and the monetary committee formed by the administration are equally responsible for the same,” said Gill.

She further added that they had all the documents that would prove that samples of the material used by the MC were checked by competent authority and also supervised by the monetary committee.
