Monday, August 27th, 2007

Chandigarh: For quite some time, Chandigarh tennis players have been doing well at the national circuit, whether it is at the junior level or the senior level. Last Saturday, when Chandigarh’s Vijayant Malik won the U-18 national doubles title in the National Junior Championship at Chennai, it added another feather in Malik’s cap who was paired up with Tamil Nadu’s S Sriram to win the title. Back from the championship, where he also reached the semi finals of the u-18 Boys singles championship, Malik, a trainee of Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association under the rural programme, is now planning to continue the fine run at the senior level too.

Tennis was the only thing that was on young Vijayant mind while he spent his time at Kurdara, a small village in Safeedon district in Haryana. It was a tough phase for this young player who used to play in very few tournaments at that time due to financial constraints. Recalling his days at the village, Malik said he used to participate in very few tournaments due to lack of sponsorship. “It was really tough during the early days of my career due to financial scarcity. It was during a tournament at the Lake Club in 2002 that CLTA offered me a stint at their academy and since then I have been training at the academy,” said Malik whose father works as a power operator at Panipat Thermal Plant. The big break came for Malik when he finished up as runners up in the Boys u-14 DSCL Nationals in 2004. He followed up with winning the Boys U-16 DSCL Nationals in 2005. Later in 2006, Malik also won the ITF Juniors Singles title at Mumbai in 2006 and also reached the finals of the doubles event at the same event.

Chandigarh: Heyy Babyy
CAST: Akshay Kumar, Fardeen Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, Vidya Balan, Boman Irani
DIRECTOR: Sajid Khan

So, okay, it’s not a copy of Three Men and A Baby. Because it’s Bollywood and there are no men in Bollywood, Akshay, Fardeen and Riteish are boys—three boys with a baby on their doorstep. In one clever stroke, first-time director Sajid Khan saves himself from straight up plagiarism charges, and allows himself the freedom to indulge in infantile humour, which boys and babies delight in.

So basically, Heyy Babyy is a running series of jokes which encompass stuff that boys find hilarious — bad smells, rear ends, involuntary emissions, and because there’s a baby in the proceedings, poo and pampers as well. But, and this is the thing, other species can join in the fun. Khan directs with a lightness of touch, and a trademark don’t-take-anything-seriously-including-myself, and comes up with a film which keeps you laughing most of its running time.
