Chandigarh: Many of the contractual teachers working in different government schools in the city are resenting over the fact that they are being underpaid as against the pay rules for teachers on contract.
Talking to Newsline, one of the teachers said, “We are doing the same amount of work as compared to the regular teachers but because we are on contract doesn’t mean we will be under-paid”.
Another teacher on request of anonymity added, “According to the new pay rules we should be paid our salary and dearness allowance, which increases every year. However, we are being paid the regular amount and are not given the benefit of increase in dearness allowance”.
According to a source in the UT Education Department, “The new pay rules state that the teachers on contract in the different government schools should be paid their basic pay and also the new increased dearness allowance. However, those who have taken a stay on the date when the contract was supposed to end by approaching the court will not be given any extra benefits. They will only be paid the usual amount and no increased dearness allowance will be added to their salaries. So the protest regarding this by the contractual teachers is baseless”.
When DPI (S) SK Setia, was contacted for his comments, he added “I cannot comment anything about the issue as the matter is pending in the court. Once the matter is decided by the court I will be able to say anything about the issue”.
