Apex court rejects government plea in Anandgarh case

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Sas Nagar: It was the moment to rejoice for the farmers who have been continuously on hunger strikes for more than three years now, when they came to know that the Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of the Punjab government in the case of land acquisitions in Anandgarh on Tuesday.

Today, at around 4 pm the farmers struggling under the banner of Kisan Hit Bachao Committee danced to the tunes of Bhangra and distributed sweets when their advocate informed them that the apex court has rejected the government’s appeal against the order of Punjab and Haryana High Court in the Anandgarh case.

DP Singh Baidwan, convener of the committee told Newsline that the land acquisition case of the farmers of Sector-76 to 80, Mohali is linked with the Anandgarh case and the decision has come as a great relief to the struggling farmers who are demanding acquisition of their lands at current market price.

He said the PUDA did not follow many conditions of the Land Acquisition Act in Anandgarh that led to rejection of some of the notifications by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2001. Following this, the government had filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the decision of the High Court, which was rejected today. Baidwan said some of the sections of the PUDA Act -1995 have not been followed in Sector 76 to 80, for which farmers approached the court and were granted a stay dispossession on around 102 acres of land.

New generation biotic drugs add flavour to food

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Chandigarh: The good bacteria are the flavour of the season with a huge increase in the number of probiotic drugs and food supplements in the market. Probiotics, the new generation biotic drugs and dietary supplements developed from yeast or lactic acid bacteria, has seen a spurt in the last five years.

“Although lacto bacilli, the good bacteria in the abdomen, has been available in the form of capsule for years, the last five years has seen more and more pharma companies come out with probiotic capsules of various combinations,” said Dr R Kochhar, Department of Gastroenterology at PGI. “Moreover, dietary supplements that claim to be probiotic have also come recently,” he added.

At least 39 probiotic drug brands, mainly in the area of gastroenterology, from 30 major Indian companies have already created a probiotics drug market in India worth Rs 80 crore, with an year-on-year growth of 41.1 per cent in 2006. Probiotic drugs are often used in case of gastrointestinal ailments like irritable bowel syndrome and post-infection diarrhea.

“The abdomen has a natural flora of good or helpful bacteria. These help synthesise vitamins and protect the body against more dangerous micro-organisms,” explained Dr Pallab Ray of Department of Microbiology at PGI. “Whenever a patient is ill or on antibiotics, the balance of good bacteria changes. The side effects of antibiotic therapy can be regulated by supplementing the good bacteria from outside,” he said.

Re-establishing the flora of normal bacteria in the intestines can combat many diarrheal diseases, he said. “Our normal consumption of bacteria is not the same as 40 years ago,” Dr Ray said. “Today, we are creating a bacteria-free environment.”

Yogurt is the best probiotic available and must be consumed in plenty. As for the market, Amul has recently launched its range of probiotic icecreams.
