With the court verdict to come today and also the Chandigarh Sports Council’s decision to grant fund only if the elections are legal, the IOA’s constant silence over the issue is something that was unexpected. The Chandigarh Olympic Association had re-elected Rana Gurmeet Sodhi and Ravinder Talwar as president and general secretary of the association in its annual general meeting on June 23.

S .M Bali attended the meeting as an IOA observer and was supposed to file his report about the election to the IOA. The group currently in power claimed of having a support of 23 units out of 37 units while the dissident faction had claimed the support of 20 units.

Bacterial, fungal diseases accompany monsoon

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

Chandigarh: With the arrival of monsoon and the weather turning humid, cases of fungal infections are already on the rise. Reason: the uncomfortable and persistent sweating that soon gives way to fungal or bacterial skin infections. “Every year we see at least 250 patients a week during monsoon season,” says Dr Swami Dass Mehta, skin specialist, Sector 22 polyclinic. “People fail to take preventive measures and end up with boils and infections,” he adds further.

Dr Mehta advises, “Personal hygiene is the key to preventing fungal infections caused by prickly heat.” He says, “People should bathe twice a day and wear clean and dry clothes. Often, clothes do not dry due to humid weather conditions, especially jeans and trousers. People should iron them properly before wearing them.”

Another important point Dr Mehta points out is to take care of hygiene in public places. “Whenever you go to a barber or a saloon, take your own towels, soaps and combs,” says Dr Mehta.

Dr Vivek Malhotra of Cosmetic Laser and Skin Care Clinic, Sector 19, also warns about infections and precautions to be taken if the problem aggravates. “Feet, groin, and underarms are the areas that should be kept dry,” he says. “People can use anti-fungal powder and ointments should only be used after professional consultation. At times, ointments can aggravate infections,” he emphasises.

2 new trains connect city with Haridwar, Allahabad, Amritsar

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Railway Station welcomed two new trains to the city today. While Unchahar Express, linking Chandigarh with Allahabad made its maiden entry on platform no 5 at 9.20 am today, the Amritsar- Haridwar- Amritsar Janshatabdi Express (2053/2054) came visiting for the first time at 12.45 pm.

The two trains also made their way back at the scheduled time although there was not much fanfare at the station. However, the two trains did not have many passengers. While there were just about 30 to 45 people in the Janshatabdi leaving for Amritsar at 4.45 pm, the Unchahar Express had about 350 people boarding it. “Not many people know about these trains as of now. But I am sure they would attract people in the next few days,” said RK Dutta, Station Superintendent.

Although, the Unchahar Express had been permanently extended upto here from Ambala, the Janshatabdi Express would operate from here only till July end. “ Due to operational constraints it has been decided to run this train with the rake for Chandigarh for only one month presently. Since the road connectivity from here to Amritsar is quite good and it takes just about 4 hours by car, we have to study what the response to this train would be like, which takes 5 hours to complete the journey,” said H K Jaggi, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Ambala Division.

Amritsar Janshatabdi will have 10 extra coaches constituting one AC coach, seven Second Class and two Sleeping/ Luggage Rake (SLR) for Chandigarh. The Amritsar- Haridwar Janshatabdi Express had an original rake of 10 coaches. The train will have a rake of 20 coaches of which 10 for Chandigarh will be detached at Ambala and similarly shunted there on its way back. This train will run six days a week except on Thursday. The AC coach fare is Rs 342 and the second class is Rs 96.

PU Syndicate meeting on July 7 to decide on action to be taken against GGSC-26

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

Chandigarh: Panjab University Syndicate meeting, to be held on July 7, will take a decision on the final action to be taken against Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, for having admitted BCom students to add-on courses while the courses had not received approval for affiliation.

During the session 2006-07, the college had started three add-on courses — Computer Based Accounting, Event Management and Advertising and Sales Management. The college applied for extension of affiliation for the courses on May 19, 2006. The inspection committee was first expected to visit the college on June 20, 2006, but the college wanted it to be deferred. Finally, the committee visited the college on February 20, 2007, but did not recommend granting of affiliation to the courses.

The 85 students, however, were allowed to take the exams after a special permission was sought for it.

The Syndicate would also discuss the problems faced by the Department of Correspondence Studies (DCS) regarding the implementation of internal assessment. A committee under the chairmanship of PU Fellow Kehar Singh has been constituted to discuss the problem. The committee has recommended that the system of internal assessment at the under-graduate level at DCS should be abolished. However, it said that it should continue at the postgraduate level.

The department has been facing problems with students not submitting assignments which have to be marked for internal assessment.

Teachers on contract feel discriminated

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

Chandigarh: Many of the contractual teachers working in different government schools in the city are resenting over the fact that they are being underpaid as against the pay rules for teachers on contract.

Talking to Newsline, one of the teachers said, “We are doing the same amount of work as compared to the regular teachers but because we are on contract doesn’t mean we will be under-paid”.

Another teacher on request of anonymity added, “According to the new pay rules we should be paid our salary and dearness allowance, which increases every year. However, we are being paid the regular amount and are not given the benefit of increase in dearness allowance”.

According to a source in the UT Education Department, “The new pay rules state that the teachers on contract in the different government schools should be paid their basic pay and also the new increased dearness allowance. However, those who have taken a stay on the date when the contract was supposed to end by approaching the court will not be given any extra benefits. They will only be paid the usual amount and no increased dearness allowance will be added to their salaries. So the protest regarding this by the contractual teachers is baseless”.

When DPI (S) SK Setia, was contacted for his comments, he added “I cannot comment anything about the issue as the matter is pending in the court. Once the matter is decided by the court I will be able to say anything about the issue”.
